In 2009, Alan Schaaf founded it in Athens, Ohio. It was his side project while he was studying computer science. It was created as a response to the usability problems found in similar services. In the 1st five months, it went up to million total page views. It became popular on social media websites like Facebook, Digg, and Reddit.

Tenor – This is an online meme and GIF search engine, and the main product is the keyboard. The keyboard is available in macOS, iOS, and Android platforms. Giphy is the major competitor. In February 2014, the company was founded by David Macintosh, Frank Nawabi, and Erick Hachenburg as Riffsy and was funded by Tenaya Capital, Menlo Ventures, Cowboy Ventures, Redpoint Ventures. Google acquired the company on March 27, 2018. The company will continue to operate as a standalone brand.
