The Empress has been an enormous success for Netflix since its premiere in September. Here is a rundown of the information we have (so far) about Netflix’s plans for Season 2 of the period drama.

Season 2 of The Empress premieres on

If Netflix’s past patterns are any indication, we probably won’t see season two of The Empress until the later part of 2023.

The first season of what?

Elisabeth, a young and determined woman, was introduced to German audiences in the first season after she had recently married into the imperial family of Austria. While the chemistry between Elisabeth and Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria (Philip Froissant) is undeniable, she must also contend with Princess Sophie of Bavaria (Melika Foroutan), who is authoritarian and controlling, and Archduke Maximilian, who is cunning and manipulative. A split in the Hapsburg royal dynasty is hardly reason for optimism when domestic unrest is being stoked and foreign enemies are knocking at the empire’s door. With a first season as captivating and dramatic as this one, it’s no surprise that fans are eager for updates.

The Empress’ Season 2 Cast

In the second season, we should be able to look forward to seeing the following cast members again:

Melika Foroutan as Princess Sophie of Bavaria,
Runa Greiner as Countess Charlotte von Stubenberg
Devrim Lingnau as Elisabeth von Wittelsbach
Philip Froissant as Franz Joseph I of Austria
Jördis Triebel as Princess Ludovika of Bavaria
Almila Bagriacik as Countess Leontine von Apafi
Wiebke Puls as Countess Sophie Esterházy
Michael Fuith as Archduke Franz Karl of Austria
Elisa Schlott as Duchess Helene in Bavaria
Andreas Döhler as Duke Maximilian Joseph in Bavaria
Martin Butzke as Gustav, Prince of Vasa
Johannes Nussbaum as Archduke Maximilian
Hanna Hilsdorf as Countess Amalia von Salm Reifferscheidt.
