Later on, however, he gave the people what they wanted while being true to Hawaiian traditions. Moreover, he elaborated on his decision to wear a traditional malo in that viral fishing photo.

Jason Momoa Strips Down to Viral Fishing Hawaiian Malo – Interview

Momoa explained to Kimmel that the tattoo is, like the malo, a part of Hawaiian tradition. He said that the tattoo, which extends from one side of his head to the other and then down the back of his neck, is a reminder to himself and his loved ones that he will always be there to defend them. His traditional ceremony was “extremely traumatic; I definitely met my forefathers,” he said.

Kimmel then brought up a photo of Momoa wearing the traditional malo while fishing and remarked that he had noticed that no one else on the boat was donning one.

It was revealed that Momoa’s actions were driven by a combination of two factors. Among his many credits is “creator, writer, director, producer, and performer” on the Apple series Chief of War, which is based in 18th-century Hawaii. He always wears the customary malo when working on such a project, he noted.

When Kimmel asked Momoa if wearing the suit was comfortable, the actor stated that he would rather do so than wear regular clothes. Or covertly, as with his Wednesday evening excursion.

Is it currently under your Flip flops?” Kimmel joked. the response was a “Of course” from him. Momoa decided it would be best to show, rather than explain, once Kimmel began asking more specific questions.

Whether or not Momoa’s stripping was meant to be a tease, Kimmel was clearly unprepared for the full spectacle.

Kimmel remarked, “Let me tell you, I’ve never felt more like Danny DeVito than I do right now,” as Momoa morphed into character. Momoa continued talking about his part in the movie and his work with the charity “Be the Match,” which works to find bone marrow donors for those who require transplants.

Kimmel said to him during their conversation, “I’m extremely pleased you have your clothes on while we’re talking about this.”

“Me too!” Momoa spoke out after a short interval.
