Smith’s first major picture since the 2022 Oscars, when his infamous slap of Chris Rock onstage led to his eventual victory as best actor and a 10-year ban from the renowned awards night, is Apple’s Emancipation.

Emancipation Trailer

In the nearly three-minute preview, we witness Smith’s character run across the marshes, fend off an alligator, and join the Union army, all with the hope of returning home to his family. And I find myself in opposition to them. They defeated me. I’ve been getting beaten up by them. They break my bones more times than I can count,” Smith sobs. They keep trying to break me, but I’m not giving in.

Apple’s upcoming Emancipation

Apple’s upcoming slavery thriller Emancipation has a new teaser that follows Will Smith as he flees from a bunch of cruel hunters and the dangerous Louisiana swamps.

Antoine Fuqua (Drictor)

The film, directed by Antoine Fuqua, is based on photographs of a slave named Peter (Smith) that were taken during a medical examination by the Union Army in 1863 and first published in the July 4, 1863 issue of Harper’s Weekly. The photographs were shocking evidence of the evils of slavery in the United States.

More About Emancipation

Peter, played by Smith with clenched teeth, endures the inhumanity and savagery of slavery by escaping from bloodhounds, alligators, and slave hunters only to be nearly killed by a flogging that leaves scars over his practically lifeless back.

After Peter was released, he wasted no time signing up to fight for the Union. When he stripped down for an Army medical checkup, the photographer had a glimpse of the wounds inflicted on his back by an overseer working on the plantation owned by John and Bridget Lyons. The photograph “The Scourged Back” first featured in The Independent in May of 1863. The image served to galvanise support for an anti-slavery movement.
